Many publishers have their own style sheets to specify the requirements for their indexes. Others prefer to use styles recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style. If you do not have a style sheet, the following decisions need to be answered prior to the beginning of the indexing process.  For any questions, please contact Gaye Tarallo at

Greystone Indexing.

  • Format: Indented or Run-in?

  • Depth of indexing: How many levels of subheadings are allowed?

  • Alphabetization: Word-by-word or letter-by-letter?

  • Capitalization of headings: First letter capital only, all capitals, or proper nouns and adjectives only?

  • Page range format: Full numbers (142-148) or conflated (142-8)?

  • Cross references: Placement, capitalization and punctuation?

  • Illustrations, tables, charts: Are these indexed, and if so, what is the page range format?

  • Appendixes, footnotes, endnotes: Are these indexed, and if so, what is the page range format?

  • Length of index: Is there a limit on number of index pages or lines?

  • Index electronic file format: Microsoft Word (.rtf ), CINDEX (.cdx), or PDF files are available.

  • Delivery of index: email, CD-ROM, or floppy disk. Hard copy available on request. There is no charge for delivery by email. Delivery charges for disks or printouts will be added to your invoice.
